At last, a truly purpose built crankshaft for high RPM / high HP Big Block Chevy engines is here. A combined effort by Callies' CNC programming and engineering staffs has resulted in a component that is distinctive and highly functional. Unique counterweight and rod arm contours produce a lightweight, aero-efficient crankshaft. Many BBC crankshafts are counterweighted to offset simple balance forces detected at main bearings 1 and 5 by today's precision balancers. Callies Series II Magnum Mass Correct counterweights have been placed specifically to reduce bearing loads. By concentrating mass at the point of imbalance, the transfer of rotating and reciprocating assembly weight loads to nonadjacent main journals is limited. Lighter overall weight is an added benefit of Mass Correct counter weighting, resulting in improved throttle response. Long stroke Big Block Chevy engines running at high RPM have the potential to retain substantial amounts of oil in the crankcase above the oil pan. This oil is suspended by turbulence "windage" resulting from oil spray, primarily from main journals, coming into contact with counterweights and connecting rods. After considerable thought and analysis, the unique Series II counterweight was created. With its distinct turbine type leading edge and "one of a kind" wicker bill trailing edge, Callies has created the first truly Directional Counterweight. The Callies Directional Counterweight gently guides oil away from moving counterweights and rod journals to greatly reduce parasitic HP loss and improve crankcase oil control. Series II Magnum Big Block Chevy cranks with Directional and Mass Correct counterweight are available in strokes up to 4.750. They can be custom ordered with 2.200, 2.100 or 2.000 rod journal diameters. Standard 2.750 and 409 main diameters are available.
